Chicken Lemonade

When we were first preparing for our baby chicks my three year old helped me mix up their special water and immediately dubbed it "Chicken Lemonade". Our chick care sheet advised adding sugar (3/4 cups to a gallon of water) for the first few days. Other websites I browsed recommended adding apple cider vinegar (1 Tablespoon to a gallon of water). I decided to use filtered water for the little ones, much as I use for the rest of my family. After the first batch of water we dropped the sugar and went to an organic electrolyte and mineral mix with the apple cider vinegar. As the chicks grow and drink more we are mixing up a gallon of our chicken lemonade every other day. At first it was fun to make "lemonade" with the boys every few days. Now I am usually making it before I head off to bed. With our adult hens I just splash some apple cider vinegar into their water every once and a while. Having baby chicks is a little more work than the adults, but I hope that in the end it will be worth it.
