Buuurd

One of the sweetest parts of bird raising is seeing my children love on them. My toddler, still clumsy with words, and quick on his feet, drops everything when one of our baby chicks comes out. Buuuurd! He exclaims with absolute joy on his face. With big bright happy eyes he points at the baby chick and repeats his word, delighted at being able to name the animal correctly and being able to pet the feathered friend with the most gentle touches any 19 month old could ever muster.

What to Feed Baby Chicks?

Our hens ate homemade chicken feed until their abrupt passing. When it was time to get our chicks I thought I would make their feed as well. When I started to research chick starter recipes I immediately came across a forum that cautioned against making your own feed. I was a little discouraged and overwhelmed. While I knew it was still possible to make my own, the caution combined with the new demands of getting children off to school, I decided that I would buy my first bag of chick starter.

Coop

I love the coop my husband crafted for me. It is heavy, but on wheels. It is airy because the heat is more troublesome than cold in our area. We picked out an old window from the ReStore and installed it on the roof to create a light filled coop. The run is detachable, but always connected so our girls can stretch and scratch at will. The only design flaw (thus far) was the initial use of chicken wire instead of heavy duty steel hardware cloth.

Chicken Killer

There is a reason we have a brooder full of baby chicks. There is a reason we had to make a few repairs to our chicken coop before I felt ready to order our baby chicks. The reason is our 1 year old German Sheppard. It is hard to believe that this adorable little puppy grew up to be a vicious chicken killer. She grew up watching the chickens. She would snuggle up

Roosting Chicks

 

Around 4 weeks old our chicks started roosting on their feeder. This is just gross, because roosting chicks are pooping chicks.  I had planned on building beautiful roosts for my precious baby birds. But real life gets in the way of ideals.
